A COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL INVESTIGATION OF OBESE WOMEN WITH BINGE EATING DISORDER

As the rate of obesity increases it becomes a more pressing concern for the public health sector. Obese people face stigmatization and prejudice as media and society pressure people, especially women, to become thinner and thinner. Previous studies suggest that obese people are no different in depression and psychopathology than normal weight people, whereas other research concludes that there are differences between the two groups. Some investigators suggest that the discrepancy in these findings is due to binge eating disorder seen in almost one third of the obese population. The current study aims to investigate this hypothesis

Individuals applying for obesity treatment were divided according to whether or not they displayed binge eating disorder (BED). Differences between the two groups were investigated using cognitive behavioral theory. The investigation studied a total of 136 people, 93 of whom were obese and had applied to the İ.U. Medical Faculty Obesity Department, and 43 people of normal weight. The 93 obese subjects were then further divided according to binge eating behaviors using the Questionnaire on Eating and Weight Patterns- Revised. Those having BED (n=26), those who binged once in a while but did not meet all the criteria for binge eating disorder (BE) (n=17), those who did not binge (nBED) (n=50). These 4 groups were asked to complete a Sociodemographic Questionnaire, Eating Attitudes Test, Cognitive Distortions Test, Body Cathexis Scale, Bulimia Investigatory Test of Edinburgh, Automatic Thoughts Scale, Brief Symptom Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory and Dysfunctional Attitudes Test.

Statistical analyses showed that the BED group scored high on the Automatic Thoughts Scale, Cognitive Distortions Scale, Brief Symptom Inventory and Dysfunctional Attitudes Test. The BED group also scored lower on the Body Cathexis Scale, indicating that they were less happy with their body image. Furthermore psychopathology and depression in the BED group was higher than the other groups. Eating attitudes measured by Eating Attitudes Test were not different between the two groups, but according to BITE there were significant differences.

As a result it was concluded that binge eating obese people are different than non-binge eating obese in cognitive styles and psychopathology and it is the recommendation of this study that these results are considered before obesity treatment is given.
