Evaluation of the sole morphology of the professional football players

By admin

Foot which is the contact point of the body with ground, transmits the body weigth through the ground by flexibility. Foot has a morphology which can easily adapt chances both in weigth and surface of the ground. Foot types can be categorized based upon sole morphology and show differences between populations. Several methods are used to diagnose the sole pathologies. Footprint analysis is one of these methods. Football is the most popular sports in the world and it is played by foot and has high risk of foot injuries. In order to reduce risk of injuries and increase the performance of the football player, suitable and ergonomical soccer boots can be designed. The aim of this study is evaluate the sole morphology of the professional

Turkish football players and compare with the healthy volunteers who never played sports professionally.
One hundred and ten professional Turkish football players, aged 25.11 ± 4.2 years who were players in the clubs of Turkish Football Federation (TFF) in Super League and League A and healthy volunteers aged 24.07 ± 3.67 years participated in the study. Descriptive anthropometric measurements such as the weight (kg) and height (cm) of each subject were measured. Footprint images of both feet were obtained by a special designed scanner system. Images of the right and left static weight bearing footprints acquired under 50 % of the body weight (standing straight with body weight evenly distributed on both feet) and 90 % of the body weight (standing straight single-limb weight-bearing stance). Measurements were performed using AutoCAD 2004 software. Arch angle, Chippaux-Smirak index, Staheli index, arch length index, arch index, footprint index, truncated arch index were calculated for both left and right feet. The variables determined were analysed using the SPSS version 11.0 statistical program. According to these results, arch angle, Chippaux-Smirak index, Staheli index and truncated arch indexes of the professional football players’ right footprints and arch angle, Sthalelli indexes of the professional fooball players’ left footprints which were acquired under 50 % of the body weight were significantly higher than the control groups’. Arch angle and truncated arch indexes of the professional football players’ right footprints and arch angle, footprint and truncated arch indexes of the prosfessional football players’ left footprints which were acquired under 90 % of the body weight were significantly higher than the control groups’. Foot morphology of Turkish football players may help to design suitable shoe which in fact may play an important role in sports performance and foot health.
