Historical development of the electricity sector Turkey: 1902-2000

The main purpose of the study is to investigate the historical development of the
Turkish electricity sector from 1902 in which electicity production was begun in
Ottoman Times, to the years 2000s. In addition, to give a general view, illumination and
the usage of natural gas are also investigated.

Fistly, privileged domestic and foreign companies operated in the sector. The
situation continued until 1930s even after the foundation of Turkish Republic. In 1930s,
the companies were nationalized by the government and transferred to either
municipalities or newly established organizations. In 1960s development plans began to
be implemented and these years were cornerstones for the electircity sector. And in
1980s privatization took place in the sector and continued to 2000s
