Investigation of the use of self compacting concrete in rapid damage repair of airfield runway

By admin

Turkish Air Force needs stationery installations as a prerequisite of its foundation
principles. Today, air-fields play crucial roles as being the first targets for enemy forces
in any possible warfare. Due to that reason, it is vitally important for a country to
manage re-operating its air-fields soon after an attack. To succeed this goal, “rapid repair
of air-fields” method, which is widely used by Turkey and NATO alliances, can be
regarded as a solution. In order to improve this method, a combination of two specific
materials will prove to be quite an advantage. The first material that constitutes this
advantageous combination is calcium aluminate cement ( CA ) that was discovered at
the turn of this century. CA cement has the distinguishing characteristics of strength
development at very early ages. The second material is Self Compacting Concrete which
brings with itself great advantages in workmanship.
In this study, so to improve the material that is used in rapid repair of air-fields
method, CA cement, basalt and quartz agregates, calcium chloride, sodium aluminate,
and lithium carbonate as accelerating admixture, as a superplasticizer polycarboxylate
based superplasticizer used for develeping a combination that has self- compacting and
high early strength properties. In the scope of this work, the mechanical characteristics,
such as fresh state features and compressive and flexural strength of this newly
designated material have also been examined.
