Patients of MS are belonging to MRI’s findings of morphometric in being evaluated

By admin

This study was done at the Department of Anatomy with the cooperation of Neurology Department, Medical School of Eskisehir Osmangazi University. Forty patients (25 females, 15 males) diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and 40 healthy people (25 females, 15 males) were included at the present study. Using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) images, we measured and compared several parameters including lateral and third ventricular width, brain width, the ratio of lateral ventricular width to brain width, bicaudate ratio, corpus callosum area in addition to volumes of the ventricles, cerebral sulci, and cerebellum + brain stem, total brain.

We performed linear, two-dimensional, and three-dimensional measurements on MRI images. Additionally, we completed tree-dimensional volume measurements of the mentioned structures using Cavalieri’s volume estimated method.
The linear measurements indicated that lateral and third ventricular width, the ratio of lateral ventricular width to brain width, and bicaudate ratio were significantly increased (p<0.001) compared to healthy controls in male and female patients suffering from MS. By contrast, a significant decrease was obtained in brain width of the same patients (p<0.001). In addition, the results of two-dimensional measurements of corpus callosum in male and female MS patients showed a significant increase (p<0.001) in corpus callosum area with regard to control group. Similarly, the volumes of the ventricles and cerebral sulci determined with three-dimensional measurements were enlarged noticeably (p<0.001) On the other hand, the reduction in total brain volume and cerebellum + brain stem volume was statistically important in these patients.
These results suggest that, brain parenchyma was replaced by ventricles and sulci in MS patients.
