The development of painted pottery untill Halaf period in Southeast Turkey

By admin

Under the scope of Mezraa Teleilat excavations, this Masters thesis investigates the
emergence of the fi rst painted pottery assemblages in Southeast Anatolia and the
impacts of such traditions made on the Halaf tradition. According to this goal, the
gradual changes in chronological aspects of the earliest painted pottery traditions in
Near East are investigated. Firstly, painted pottery groups from sites in Southeast
Anatolia, Northern Syria, Northern Iraq, and Western Iran that were contemporary
with the pottery from Mezraa Teleilat were pulled together from their publications in
order to identify and compare these painted pottery traditions.

Secondly, painted pottery assemblages from Mezraa Teleilat were studied in detail,
including cataloguing, drawing, photographing the pot sherds, and identifying patterns
through statistical analysis. This work identifi es the similarities and differences of this
pottery group with the other painted pottery assemblages from various sites. At the end
of the study, the presence of this pottery assemblage at Mezraa Teleilat places the site
within the relative chronology and emphasizes the signifi cance of the site during the
Late Neolithic in the Near East.
