The effect of transverse tining on friction and compressive strength at concrete roads

It is found that, concrete roads, which have been used in the world more
than 70 years, are prior alternative according to asphalt roads in many places
by researches and existing practices.
In this study, effect of transverse tinings on friction and compressive
strength at concrete roads are examined. Transverse tining is a surface
texturing treatment to concrete road pavements. It has been used to reduce
wet-weather accidents caused by skidding and hydroplaning. For transverse
tinings, the most important criterions to look for are spacing between tines, tine
width and tine depth. According to these dimensions, different skid resistances,
hydroplaning speeds and noise values are obtained. In this study, the effect of

tine width on concrete surface friction is examined and skid resistance values
are measured for different tine widths with constant tine spacings and tine
depths by British pendulum device. It is examined if there is any effect of
rounding of tine corners on friction and it is observed that bigger friction values
are obtained by increasing tine width and these values are decreasing by
rounding the corners. It is seen that, measurements done by British pendulum
device are effected by surface makro texture. Beside that, to examine the
behaviour of different types of concretes under the vehicle tire, compressive
strength tests are done by tire rubber coverings. After the compressive strength
tests by using rubber, it is found that, concrete is broken at lower values than
values for normal compressive strength tests. It is also seen that, by increasing
the tine width, concrete compressive strength decreases under tire rubber and
crackings are formed as sudden splits. As a result, it is found that, by increasing
tine width, skidding resistance values increases and compressive strength
values decreases under the tire rubber.
