The problem of method in plato
The problem of method in Plato was discussed by analyzing Socratic Refutation (Elenchus), Hypothesis, Division and Collection methods thoroughly which are considered as aspects of dialectic. In doing so, the opportunity was born to deal with important philosophical concepts and problems of Plato.
First of all, The Eleatic School and The Sophists were examined within the limits of their relevance to the subject and then the main lines of Plato’s philosophy were presented. Afterwards, the methods, which are considered as different aspects of dialectic and seen in Plato, were studied. During the study, the chronological order of the dialogues and the calssifications of Plato’s thought were examined following the main lines by paying attention for them not to be more important and determinative than they must be. While the methods were being represented by their cronological order, the differences and the similarities between them were pointed out. The outcome showed that subjects like the principle, aim and consciousness of the individual played a decisive role in the issue of method.
One can say that despite the fact that Plato has no certain lines, there is a definite project that is followed. In this context, though his philosophy may look scattered, but once evaluated as a whole, it is continuum. Moreover, the parts like ontology, epistemology and logic are not absolute distinctions and the issues of these fields are much more connected then one could imagine. In order to go deep into philosophical issues it is crucial to understand these connections. And thinking on the problem of method can provide a starting point to figure out them.
